Winona Ryder Professionally Winona Ryder, was born on Winona Minnesota. Her name was chosen by her parents after the town in which she was born. Both her father Michel Horowitz, and mother Cynthia Palmer are authors and editors. Ryder is a Jew. Ryder believes that her father came from an Jewish heritage. The actress is the younger sister of Uria and also has half-siblings Jubal and Sunyata. Ryder was born in the United States and moved together with her family to Mendocino County California at the age of seven. The family didn't have electricity. Ryder was an avid bookworm and spent most of her time reading a book because she had no TV. Ryder started taking classes in acting at the American Conservatory Theatre in 1983 aged twelve years old. When she was in 1986, she had her first film role the film Lucas at just fifteen years old. Ryder suffered bullying in high school. Ryder hoped the acting profession would improve her life. Sadly that didn't happen. However, she continued to pursue the goals she had set for herself. The year 1988 saw her first big breakthrough in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. Ryder continued to perform successful parts in several films. Ryder was nominated twice for Academy Awards one for her performance for her performance in The Age of Innocence (1993).
